Detoxing for Artists September 14 2017

Even though I now have only non-toxic and natural art materials around, I have to admit that I spent most of my life practically bathing in turpentine and leaving heavy-metal laden paints on my skin to seep into my bloodstream. But even if I hadn't been an artist, just living on this planet means we need to detoxify or lesson our toxic load. I personally developed a variety of allergies that started after 4 years of art school and now, 13 years later I'm still working to detoxify all of that from my system.

I went to an eye opening lecture recently by two renowned naturopaths who had an expertise in detoxifying. They first told us that most humans on the planet have around 200 types of toxins in their body (even those that eat all organic food and live a healthy lifestyle) and that there is no place on earth without toxins. Also, most newborn babies are born with around 170 types of toxins in their bloodstream already (tested only minutes after birth).

The more you cleanse and take a few simple steps to detoxify daily, the better you feel - more energy, vitality, fewer colds, allergies, illnesses, or diseases - the benefits are endless. I'll mention a few of the daily and weekly detox habits that they suggested.

Daily: Releasing toxins from the skin: Begin every morning (or every time you shower) by dry brushing your entire body with a loofah mit or stiff brush. It doesn't have to take long, just 60 seconds or so - making strokes towards your heart. To go even further, quickly coat your body with organic sesame oil or coconut oil. Next, take a warm shower (no soap except on the underarms) and complete your whole shower routine. At the end of the shower do a little water therapy by turning the shower to hot for 30 seconds (not scalding but just a little hotter than is comfortable), then cool for 30 seconds (not freezing, just refreshing), back to hot and then end with cool. This does ALOT to get those toxins out through the skin. It's also very energizing when you get out - like drinking a cup of coffee.

Cilantro: This is the only known food that detoxifies heavy metals from the system. After years of using cadmium and cobalt paints, I have incorporated cilantro into my daily diet. I chop it up on almost every meal - scrambled eggs, stir-fry, burritos, etc. 

Weekly: Do a mini cleanse once a week- Eat all fruits and vegetables one day a week, along with some good fats (coconut oil and olive oil).

Monthly: Do one major cleanse (2-4 weeks), at least once a year in the Spring or Fall. There are many great options that involve eating lots of yummy, allergen-free foods along with supplements and cleansing herbs. Cleansing doesn't always mean fasting. Ask your local naturopath for cleanse plan suggestions.
